Shih pao-hu (chosen american name “frank”) arrived on U.S. shores in 1945 and went to work as a journalist covering the war. the chinese exclusion act had just been lifted two years earlier and his immigration papers were numbered #25. he het a young college student, alice jeung, in berkeley, married and started a family when they moved to washington dc for his job. Frank was a news editor and broadcaster for the voice of america for many decades, eventually rising to head of the china bureau there. he had a long and interesting life but never forgot his family in china, finally getting to travel back when relations normalized. he died at home in 2012 at the age of 101, surrounded by his loving family.
