I was born near Chicago in 1992. I’m half Chinese on my father’s side, with a white English mother. All of my life I knew that I was Chinese, and people thought of me as Chinese, but because I am multiracial and knew very few Chinese people, I never felt very connected to the Chinese community. My heritage is something that I’ve been thinking about much more lately, and it’s something I’m beginning to explore in my artwork.
One of my early art teachers once said to me, “You’re not going to make art about being Asian, are you?”, which scared me away from the subject. But now that I’m older I know that their opinion doesn’t matter.
