Curtis-WongAfter immigrating to the U.S. for college, my father quickly established a presence in the Asian-American community, first at the State University of New York – Buffalo, then in Connecticut and ultimately in Los Angeles, where he lived until his death in 1995.Above all, my father taught me to approach each new experience as if I were the diplomat of a foreign country, and to never take opportunities for granted. No doubt this advice was borne out of his earliest struggles as a Chinese-American immigrant; while he assimilated to the national culture and became an American citizen in 1987, he always felt like an outsider in his heart.

As a first-generation American, I’ve aimed to maintain this spirit of perseverance through my own personal and professional experiences both in the U.S. and abroad. Thank you, Dad.
